Instagram is a showcase for your talent. It’s through your photos that clients fall in love with your designs, trust you, and book a manicure. But even the most beautiful nail design can get lost if it’s photographed in the dark, out of focus, or against a kitchen table. If you’re just starting out in the nail industry, here are some basic tips for taking photos that sell.
Light is your best friend
Natural light is ideal for shooting. Place your hand near a window, but avoid direct sunlight (it creates unnecessary shadows and "washes out" colors). If there is not enough light, use a ring light or soft LED lighting.
- Life hack: it's better to take photos from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. — the light is softer and best conveys the shades of gel polish.
Background matters.
Avoid backgrounds that are too bright, colorful, or dirty. The best is a neutral one: white, cream, pastel, or colors that match the design. Use cute details: napkins, flowers, accessories. But don't overload the frame — the main thing is the nails.
Frame composition
The most winning angles:
- “Fingers in a Fan” is a classic;
- One hand supports the other;
- Tilt your arm at a 45° angle to the camera;
- Profile photo for designs with three-dimensional elements.
Don't forget about clean skin, neat fingers, and no dust on your nails.
Phone vs professional camera
A modern-generation smartphone is more than enough. Turn on manual focus, shoot in portrait mode, don't use zoom, and hold the camera as still as possible. If you have a tripod, that's ideal!
Processing is not about filters, but about accuracy
Do not use heavy filters that change the color of the coating - this misleads customers. It is enough:
- Increase brightness;
- Adjust white balance;
- Easily remove skin redness;
- Crop the photo to a square (the perfect format for Instagram).
Be recognizable
Shoot all your photos in the same style: the same lighting, colors, caption or watermark. This way you won't just have a set of photos, but a profile with your own handwriting.
And remember: the first photo is not always perfect. But each new shoot is a step towards your personal brand. With practice, you will be able to create photos that not only collect likes, but also bring in new clients.
